The mayor of bormio sent us on our way after the wildest water pistol fight with a police escort to the edge of town.
A stunning trip over the stelvio pass this is not for faint hearted the car was very very quiet, 15 of the tightest corners you have ever seen until you face the 48 even tighter corners coming down all with a serious slope just to add to the excitement. The mountain views were quite simply stunning and the clutch and the brakes were happy with the rest at the top.
The pink fiat boys made it the top but had no brakes, coming back down an ingenious plan was hatched to use the ford galaxy as brakes very funny and it worked.
Fairly uneventful trip through the valleys of switzerland, austria, germany and back into austria and on at a rapid pace into Strasbourg
There is a little haggling going on we have 3 teams who want our car. At the moment the notts boys are taking it in prague and taking it over to the nurbergring on wednesday for a spin.
Mileage - 265 Faults with the car - And a couple more!
1. Brakes- not good, the stelvio took its toll and there is a definite squealing.
2. Drivers window a little stuck ( half way down, or half way up ? )
What a day..one of us was Up bright and early, the other was suffering after a few too many jars in a bar with a couple of other teams and bar staff with a penchant for cross-dressing. The usual merriment at the starting line we found ourselves driving almost vertically up the sussten pass into the clouds where visibility was down to 10ft with a life threatening drop to the right and coaches taking both lanes coming the other way it kind of keeps you focussed.
Up and over the other side in convoy with the pink fiat 127 students, the notts boys in a ford galaxy and a 2cv driven by a guy from prague after about an hour we discovered everyone thought someone else knew the way, schoolboy error ! We had travelled in the wrong direction for an hour, quick u turn back on track.
Oberalppass proved formidable ,as did the other couple of mountains we clearly forgot the name of.passing through the most jaw dropping scenery imaginable we cascaded into Italy...arriving in the picture postcard town of bormio where we await tomorrow morning, the mayor, the parade and(gulp) the stelvio pass....
Mileage - 300... plus 50 mile diversion! Faults with the car - And a couple more!
1. Suspected water leak ( when parking on the start line a water puddle appeared ) moved the car to new position , no puddle we are counting this as a fix.
2. Squealing brakes , turn stereo up no problems.
3. Drivers seat too comfortable joe had a quick nap today whilst driving. Need to talk more or move hammer from the boot to the passenger seat.
After a very shaky start involving 4 bleary eyes and 2 banging heads Team Steamer Beemer joined the rogues gallery of a start line.taking pride of place amongst a hearse, thunderbird 2 and a sauna we set off for interlaken making strong progress through france we didn't happen across a single europlod car (the irony being we earn extra points for snapping them) after a few new engine management lights alerted us to their presence and a high speed issue with a cigarette making a bid for freedom in the car.
We ploughed into switzerland after a brief sortie into germany gunning past towns such as Bad Wangen and Wankdorf and chuckling childishly we finally arrived in the devastatingly gorgeous Interlaken..12 hours later! with The car (and more crucial) our friendship and working relationship still intact...we await tomorrow..and the perilous mountain passes it possesses.
Mileage - 550... Yes 550 ! Faults with the car - A few more !
1. New light on the dash ( easily solved...hit the top of the dashboard really hard and it went out ) we are obviously in the wrong game joe + pete car repairs that's the future.
2. Tappits are very very loud ( again an easy fix turn up the stereo ) see above.
Day 1 in the BMW
Well only 200m has passed (McDonalds on Orion Way ) when the dashboard fell apart. Long trip down to Dover with a long hold up at Stanstead services ( traffic light failure ) although Joe took servere abuse from a local who took an instant dislike to him for no apparent reason and a 8 mile queue at the bridge. Missed the ferry by 3 mins so booked onto the next crossing.
Arrived in Calais a little late to book in but managed to enjoy a little French hospitality and several beers with the new found friends from Maidstone, Kent ( lower East Essex apparently ). They're West Ham fans but we're not going to hold it against them as they're a good bunch of lads.
Getting a little too drunk to drive...
Mileage - 183 Faults with the car - 2
1. D ashboard is hanging down 2. Red light on the display ( its kind of distracting so we have covered it up with a piece of tape ) much better now.
